Основана она была Лаури Илоненом (вокал, тексты), Ээро Хейноненом (бас), Паули Рантасалми (гитара) и Янне Хейсканеном (ударные). Хейсканен ушёл из группы в 1998 году, и вскоре его заменил Аки Хакала.До выпуска четвёртого студийного альбома Into (2001) группа называлась просто Rasmus, но затем... продолжение
